BRENDA STARR PAINTINGS

These paintings are based upon one of my childhood heroines, the comic strip character Brenda Starr.  I construct narratives for her and her lover Basil that are steeped in symbolism suggesting romance, danger and death. Detailed subplots and humor play a significant role in the story-telling.

I place my protagonist in situations that parallel episodes from my personal life.  Sometimes I place the couple in an exotic locale, dancing in a contradictory environment such as the Amazon jungle, the frozen tundra of Antarctica or near a nuclear power plant in California.  These surroundings are realistic and imitate the scenic backgrounds of stage plays.
